Unfortunately, they were not readily available to the public.....
1983 Buick Riviera Pace car (410 HP). The highest power one could get in a Riv in 1983 was the T-Type version rated at 180.
1984 Pontiac Fiero Pace Car — 232 HP from the rare Pontiac 2.7L SD4 motor as opposed to the 92 HP of the Iron Duke we of the proletariat were stuck with.
The SD4 engine was available for purchase; you had to figure out how to install it yourself as GM didn't install it in any vehicle they sold on a showroom floor. It was available as a 2.7L or 3.2L block from what I can find.

The SD4 is the greatest aspired four-banger of all time. I strongly advise you to look up the Cosworth 3.3-litre version, which was capable of more than 370 hp.

Nah, the Dodge Omni is but a dream here in Norway.

I believe that's the one in the buildup thread I linked to looking further into it.

Neat stuff, what a pity nothing really came of these. The Fiero has got to be the poster child for wasted automotive potential.

I learned on a 5spd. The cable clutch is so heavy, my knees hurt just thinking about having to drive that thing again.
They might be "Collectable" now, but they're on par with a Honda Civic now...a lighter clutch feel would do a lot for one of those cars.

I've owned 30-40 cars so far, most of them generic shitboxes :P But I must admit that an AMC Gremlin or a Dodge Omni is high on the list of cars I need to try.

I've owned a few. If you want a relatively reliable street car in the 12-13 second range on a Ramen Noodle budget the L body is a good choice.

Original Pontiac Super duty 4
The Pontiac Super duty was originally developed as a three cam bearing high performance iron racing block for the 84 Fiero racing program. A later iron block was offered with five cam roller bearings. There were a series of iron and aluminum heads and finally an aluminum block and head combination was offered (used by midget racers with some success).
As originally designed the Super Duty was 2.5L (151 CI). It was built in many displacements up to 3.3L. For exmaple a 3.3L 16 valve super duty engine was dynoed at 424HP. The 16V head kit was at one time available from Cosworth for around $5K.
The 16V (chain drive) head was developed by Cosworth of California for Pontiac and raced with little success in 1987 and 1988 (IMSA GTP Spice Entech/Dole Fiero).

They've kind of expired on me. I'm just not much of a fan of them anymore. It wasn't a bad car, and it was really good at getting 35+MPG on long drives, but on ours, the exhaust got a little droney with age, and then (despite sharing some parts with newer cars) parts became a little hard to find, and interest was lost. It was just difficult to drive for anyone with bad knees, and that was the biggest cause for my dad to part with his.

There are reasons for not taking the plunge back in on my end too.
Though, I'm not sure of my current project either. That'll be an "Oppopinion" post in a few minutes.
I have to say that the seats in the Omnis were some of the best I've encountered in a bottom rung car.
